Theatre
Theatre is a subject. The Theater is a place.
“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
–Thornton Wilder (1897–1975), Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright and novelist
At CVESD as educators, we use the title of Theatre, not drama.
Theatre encompasses all the gifts and skills it takes to create a Theatrical Production. Theatre Artists engage in the design and creativity of scriptwriting, directing, costumes, hair, make-up, sound, music, lighting, set design, set building, props and so much more. Regardless of whether the play is a non-musical or musical theatre production, it may involve visual arts, singing, dancing, musicians, and of course ACTING.
Theatre is an amazing outlet for students to build their self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy. It supports skills in listening and speaking, reading and writing, concentration, cooperation, collaboration, language, communication, and creativity.
In the Chula Vista Elementary School District all the VAPA curriculum is standards-based. The theatre standards are designed to enable students to achieve literacy in theatre. They are written with both drama processes and theatre production in mind. Ongoing student engagement in theatre without an end product is a valid expression of theatre understanding. The four artistic processes addressed separately in the theatre standards; creating, performing, responding, and connecting are envisioned to occur simultaneously in the actual practice of theatre.
Theatre is not only an art, it is most ENJOYABLE!
As Thornton Wilder implied, determine your sense of being human through the theatre. As Theatre Educators here in CVESD, this is our gift!
*Please note that all "primary" lessons could also be appropriate for SDC and visa versa. We have separated them onto categories (Primary, Upper and SDC) but feel free to look through all the lessons in the 3 tabs and try out any that look fun, interesting, and/or piqued your interest.
